How To Purchase Health Insurance

Purchasing individual or family Illinois health insurance is an important decision.  Benefits, pricing, underwriting and administrative procedures vary widely.  Picking a good agency is as important as picking the plan that is perfect for you. Medequote doesn't just sell health plans, we service our clients after the sale. We build relationships with our clients that last for years. We are a local Illinois agency specializing in health benefits, thats all we do, so we are experts in answering all your questions, and assisting you in communicating with your insurance company. If you need client references we are happy to provide them. In 2005 we expanded our licence's to include Michigan health insurance, and Texas health insurance.

Once you have picked a plan this is the scenario you can expect when you apply for health insurance.

You must complete an application.

The application contains detailed questions about your health history, medication history and any treatment you may require in the future.  Depending on the health insurance company you choose, the following application options are available:

  • Online application -- This is the fastest way to get your application processed.  Online applications are available from most of the insurers we represent, and you can access these online application forms via links in this website. Unicare, Celtic, Humana, BCBSIL, and Assurant offer this service.
  • Telephone application -- The easiest way to apply for health insurance is over the phone through Medequote. We can guide you through the application process for all carriers and answer any questions you have along the way. Give us a call at 800-391-7469. Many phone applications are instantly issued.
  • Download and print application forms -- You can also complete most applications by hand, and mail the completed form with payment to us.  Just follow the attached instructions. This option is available for most health insurers listed in the Individual and Family section of this website. World Insurance will accept faxed applications with first months premium by credit card.

You must submit a payment with most applications.

Most of the health insurance companies we represent require a premium deposit to be submitted with an application.

  • A check or money order is typically required, through some insurers will allow you to charge the premium deposit to a credit card.
  • Some insurers charge a non-refundable application fee.
  • If your application is accepted, your premium deposit will be applied against your premium requirement for the first period of coverage.
  • If your application is denied, you will receive a refund of your premium deposit , net (if applicable) any non-refundable application fee.
  • Assurant requires your bank account information for monthly bankdraft. Assurant does not require payment until the policy is approved.

The health insurance company will perform an initial review.

The health insurance company will verify information on your application and/or obtain additional information they view as necessary to evaluate your application.

  • Some insurers will interview you over the phone for purposes of verifying and clarifying the information on your application.
  • Some insurers will ask that you complete questionnaires specific to a health condition you list on the application.
  • Some insurers may order a copy of your medical records.  This depends on your health and age.  Some insurers always order medical records for applicants age 50 or older.
  • Most insurers will contact your physician's office and pay a reasonable sum for copying and sending your records.  Some insurers will require you to obtain the records and bear any cost required by the physician's office.
  • For older applicants who have not seen a physician in two or more years, some insurers will require an up-to-date checkup or paramedic exam.  Some insurers will help arrange the paramedic exam.

The insurer will underwrite your application.  Once the health insurance company receives all required information, they review it and make a decision regarding your application.  Following are possible outcomes not necessarily applicable to all health insurers:

  • Your application may be approved with normal coverage at preferred  rates.  This is the best outcome.
  • The insurer may counter-offer coverage at rates higher than preferred rates.
  • The insurer may counter-offer a benefit plan containing exclusions not contained in their standard insurance agreement.
  • The insurer may counter-offer higher rates and non-standard exclusions to the standard insurance agreement.
  • The insurer may decline to accept your application.  In such an event, you would receive a refund of your premium deposit, net (if applicable) the non-refundable application fee.

How long does the process take?

If you are in excellent health, it may be immediate upon submission of your application for approval.  If additional information is needed, it will take longer.  If medical records are ordered, the process may take six weeks or more, through the large majority of applications are processed in six weeks or less.

Every case is different so please give us a call at 800-391-7469 to get a good idea on how fast to expect your policy to be issued.
