News about health and medicine Good care, good kids: A study of diverse children from preschool through the second grade showed that those who received high-quality child care had a modest but lasting improvement in language, academic and social skills. The University of North Carolina study, reported in the journal Child Development, added support to previous related research. More than half of all 3-to-5-year-old children are in some type of preschool, many of poor quality.
Diabetes diagnosis: A simple blood test that can be administered on the spot without prior fasting, could identify millions of patients with previously undetected diabetes, new research shows. The study, published in the January issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that the test, HgAic, accurately indicates blood-sugar levels over the previous two to three months and can detect at least 75 percent of diabetes cases without the need for fasting. The best candidates for the test are those with one or more of three risk factors: obesity, high blood pressure and family history of diabetes.
Olympics lesson: If you hit high altitudes for sport, lower the physical demands on yourself or risk injury or illness. Aerobic performance can decrease by 2 percent to 27 percent, depending on the altitude, according to research presented at an annual summit of the U.S. Olympic Committee and American College of Sports Medicine. Practical solutions: • To fully acclimatize to reduced oxygen typically takes three weeks, but at least give your body a day. That may help ward off high-altitude illness. • Drink lots of fluids; you lose more water at higher elevations because of deeper and more frequent breathing, so you're at greater risk of dehydration. Fluids do not include coffee, soda, beer and other alcoholic beverages. • Rest after an intensely active day. It's OK to take a day off from the slopes, nap or curl up with book to recharge your batteries.
